Kia ora, Year 7 students! Today, we’re going to embark on a mathematical adventure that will take us through the exciting world of greater than, less than, and equal to. To get us started, let’s dive into a fun and engaging scenario that will spark our curiosity and help us grasp these concepts!
Imagine you’re a contestant in the Great Kiwi Number Contest! You’ve been invited to participate in an exciting challenge where you'll have to compare different numbers to find out who will win the title of "Greatest Number in Aotearoa."
Competition Setup: In pairs, you will receive sets of numbers written on colourful cards. Each pair will have 5 different numbers.
The Goal: Your task is to decide which numbers are greater, less than, or equal to each other. After you make your comparisons, you'll present your findings to the class.
Rewards: The pair that correctly identifies the relationships between the most numbers wins a fabulous Kiwi-themed prize!
Here’s a helpful refresher on the symbols we’ll be using in our competition:
Greater Than (>): This means the number on the left is larger than the number on the right. For example, (7 > 4) (7 is greater than 4).
Less Than (<): This indicates the number on the left is smaller than the number on the right. For example, (3 < 9) (3 is less than 9).
Equal To (=): This means both numbers are the same. For example, (5 = 5) (5 is equal to 5).
Form your pairs: Gather with your partner and make sure you have your number cards ready.
Discuss: Talk through the numbers on your cards, using the symbols we just reviewed.
Present: After you’ve completed your comparisons, be ready to present your findings to the class. Explain your reasoning for the comparisons you made!
As we compare numbers today, remember: every number has its own unique value, just like each of you! Let's see who will emerge as the winners of the Great Kiwi Number Contest and add some exciting energy to our understanding of mathematics!
So grab your number cards, and let's make this a fun-filled maths lesson! Who’s ready to compare some numbers? 🎉
