A Fun Beginning to Our Lesson on Fiction vs. Nonfiction

Introduction to the Lesson

Hello, everyone! Today, we are going to go on an exciting adventure to explore Fiction and Nonfiction! But first, let’s start with a super fun activity that will help us understand these two kinds of writing.

Activity: Story Parade

Step 1: Gather the Books

Before class starts, gather a selection of books. Choose a mix of both fiction and nonfiction books, like:

Step 2: Set the Stage

Create a “Story Parade” area in the classroom. You can use a colorful rug or just an open space to make it special.

Step 3: Important Questions

As we get ready for our parade, I have two special questions for you to think about:

Let’s grab our books and line them up in two separate rows—one for fiction and one for nonfiction.

Step 4: The Parade!

Now, we're going to walk to the front of the room with each book and give it a big cheer! On our way, I want you to shout out which kind of book it is: “Fiction!” or “Nonfiction!”

As we cheer for each book, we’ll share one thing we think makes it special. For example, if we pick a story about a fairy, we might say, “This story is fiction because it is make-believe!” If we pick a book about tigers, we can say, “This book is nonfiction because it tells us real facts about tigers!"

Conclusion

At the end of our Story Parade, we will sit down and talk about what we learned. This fun activity will not only help us understand the differences between fiction and nonfiction but also get us excited about the stories we are going to read!
