Imagine that the number line is like a secret path through a magical forest filled with numbers. Each number is a special tree, and between these trees, there are exciting adventures waiting for you. Today, we'll learn to walk along this path and understand how numbers are ordered, how to add and subtract, and how to find our way with this fantastic tool.
To kick off our lesson, let’s play a little game called Number Line Hop!
Create a Number Line: On the floor (or a large piece of paper), create a number line using tape or markers. Make sure to label the numbers from 0 to 10 (or further, if your class is ready).
Gather the Class: Ask all students to gather around the number line.
Call Out a Number: I will call out a number, and you will hop to that number on the number line.
Adding and Subtracting: After everyone is at the right number, I’ll ask questions like, “What is 2 more than this number?” or “Can you hop back 3 spaces to find the answer?”
Discuss Our Findings: After the activity, we can talk about what we noticed. Which numbers were easier to hop to? Did we notice how numbers get bigger or smaller?
