Objective:
To introduce the concept of identity in art through an interactive and engaging self-portrait challenge.
Materials Needed:
- Mirrors
- Pencils or charcoal
- Drawing paper or canvases
- Paints or other preferred mediums
- Classroom space for students to work
Procedure:
- Start by asking students to briefly define the term "identity" and discuss its importance in art.
- Introduce the self-portrait challenge by explaining that students will be creating a self-portrait that reflects their personal identity.
- Hand out materials and ask students to begin by looking at themselves in the mirror and sketching a rough outline of their face and features.
- Encourage students to think about how they want to portray themselves and their identity in their self-portrait. Do they want to focus on their physical features, or perhaps include elements that reflect their personality or interests?
- Allow students ample time to work on their self-portraits, offering guidance and support as needed.
- Once students have completed their self-portraits, have them share their work with the class and discuss their artistic choices. What did they learn about themselves through this exercise? How did they convey their identity through their artwork?
- Optional: Display the self-portraits in a gallery-style exhibit for other classes to view.
By starting with an interactive and creative challenge, students will be more engaged and invested in learning about the important concept of identity in art. This exercise also allows for individual expression and interpretation, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the diverse identities that exist within the classroom.
