To engage Year 1 students in a fun and interactive way to introduce the topic of descriptive words and storytelling.
Begin the lesson by placing the decorated box on a table where all students can see it. Tell the students that today they are going on a “Mystery Box Adventure!”
Ask the students, “What do you think is inside this box?” Encourage them to shout out some wild guesses and spark their imaginations. You might hear suggestions like, “A dinosaur!” or “A treasure!”
Select a volunteer to come to the front. Blindfold the volunteer (if using) and ask them to reach into the box and feel an object. Ask them to describe what they feel to the class without saying what the object is. Prompt them to use descriptive words (like “soft,” “round,” “smooth,” etc.).
After the volunteer has described the object, encourage the rest of the class to guess what it might be based on the clues given. This will help them practice listening, vocabulary, and inference skills.
Once the object is guessed, discuss how descriptive words help us picture things in our minds, just like in stories. Explain that today, they will be learning how to use descriptive words to create our own stories!
With excitement built up, smoothly transition into the lesson by explaining that they will be writing their own stories using descriptive words inspired by the objects from the Mystery Box.
