As the students enter the classroom, have them gather around a table where the mystery box is placed, covered with a cloth. Show them the box without revealing what's inside and create an air of anticipation.
Tell the students that inside the box are some exciting items, but they need to use their math skills to find out how many items are inside! However, first, they need to solve a few addition problems.
Write the following addition problems on the board:
Each time a student solves a problem correctly, they earn a clue about how many items are in the box! For example, after solving the first problem, you might tell them, “You’re getting closer! There are at least 8 items in the box!”
After the students have worked through all the problems, it’s time to unveil the box. Have them guess how many objects are inside based on the clues. When they open it, they will be rewarded with the colorful objects!
Now that you have the objects, count them together as a class! This collaborative counting exercises not only reinforces addition skills but also builds excitement. To extend the activity, you can encourage the students to create their own addition problems using the objects in front of them.
