Lesson Introduction: Digital Citizenship in Design and Technology

Objective

Today, we're diving into the essential concept of Digital Citizenship—a vital skill not only in design and technology but in all areas of life, especially as we leverage digital tools for creativity and innovation.

Engaging Hook: "The Digital Passport"

Activity Overview

To set the stage, students will embark on a brief imaginative journey called "The Digital Passport." This activity will engage their creativity and curiosity while introducing the importance of navigating the digital world responsibly.

Instructions

  1. Personal Reflection (5 Minutes)
Ask each student to think about their online experiences. Consider the following questions:

    • What social media platforms do you use, and why do you enjoy them?
    • Have you ever encountered something online that made you uncomfortable?
    • How do you think your online behavior reflects on you as a person?
  2. Creating a Digital Passport (10 Minutes)
Distribute blank sheets of paper or offer students digital tools on their devices. Each student will create a “Digital Passport” that contains:

    • A Name - Their online persona
    • A Photo - Use a drawing, emoji, or a selfie if comfortable
    • A Country - Where they would like to "travel" online (e.g., different social media platforms, websites, or games)
    • Travel Goals - List three positive actions they can take to be a responsible digital citizen (e.g., respect others' opinions, think before sharing, report inappropriate content).
  3. Share and Discuss (10 Minutes)
Have students pair up and share their Digital Passports with one another. Encourage them to discuss their travel goals and why they matter in today’s digital landscape. After their discussions, reconvene as a class to share insights.

Transition to Lesson Content

With their Digital Passports in hand, remind students that just like a passport guides us through countries with customs and regulations, digital citizenship serves as our guide in the online world. Today, we will explore the digital landscape further—understanding how to navigate it wisely and responsibly, as future designers and innovators in technology.

Let’s kick off our lesson on Digital Citizenship!
