Preschool Science Lesson Plan
Lesson Title: Exploring Our Senses
Duration
30 minutes
Age Group
Preschool/Nursery (Ages 3-5)
Learning Objectives
- Children will identify and describe the five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.
- Children will engage in hands-on activities to explore their senses.
- Children will improve their vocabulary related to sensory experiences.
Materials Needed
- A variety of objects to explore (e.g., textured fabrics, essential oils, fruits, musical instruments)
- Sensory bins (e.g., rice, beans, water beads)
- Pictures that depict different sensory experiences
- Paper and crayons
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Gather the children in a circle.
- Introduce the five senses by saying: "Today, we are going to learn about our senses! Who can tell me what senses we have?"
- Listen to their responses and guide them to cover all five senses.
Activity 1: Sensory Stations (15 minutes)
Set up five stations, each dedicated to one of the senses. Divide children into small groups and rotate them through each station.
-
Sight Station:
- Use colorful images and ask children to describe what they see.
- Invite them to draw their favorite colors.
-
Hearing Station:
- Provide musical instruments (like shakers and tambourines) and have children listen to different sounds.
- Ask them to create sounds and identify the noises they hear.
-
Smell Station:
- Present different scents (e.g., lemon, vanilla, peppermint).
- Let kids smell each one and describe what they feel or remember.
-
Taste Station:
- Offer small pieces of different fruits (e.g., apple, banana, orange).
- Encourage kids to taste and discuss who likes what and why (check for allergies).
-
Touch Station:
- Provide various textured items (e.g., rough sandpaper, smooth silk).
- Have children feel each object and describe how it feels.
Activity 2: Group Discussion (5 minutes)
- After all groups have visited the stations, gather the children back in a circle.
- Ask them to share one thing they learned about their senses.
- Encourage them to use descriptive words about what they experienced.
Closing Activity: Sensory Drawing (5 minutes)
- Provide each child with paper and crayons.
- Instruct them to draw something related to one of their senses.
- Allow them to share their drawings with the group if they wish.
Assessment
- Observe children during activities to assess their engagement and understanding of the senses.
- Encourage verbal sharing to gauge their ability to articulate their experiences.
Conclusion
- Recap the five senses and ask children to think about how they use their senses every day.
- Reinforce the idea that their senses help them learn about the world around them.
Extension Activities
- Create a sensory journal where children can draw or paste items they encounter throughout the week that relate to their senses.
- Plan a nature walk where children can use their senses to observe the environment.
Notes for Teachers
- Be mindful of any allergies when including snack items for the taste station.
- Ensure a mix of guided activities and free exploration to promote discovery and learning.
