Academic Subject: Mathematics
Lesson Length: 15 minutes
Grade Level: Preschool (Ages 2-3)
Objective:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Count up to 5 using their fingers.
- Match the numbers 1-5 to corresponding objects.
Materials Required:
- Flashcards with numbers 1-5 ({The image of flashcards with large bold numbers}).
- Picture cards with objects in varying quantities (e.g. one apple, two balls, three flowers, four cars, five stars) ({The image of picture cards with objects}).
- A quiet work area for each student.
Lesson Content:
-
Introduction:
- Start by asking the students if they know how to count numbers. Let them count by using their fingers. Encourage them to count as far as they can.
- Then, ask them if they know what each number looks like, and show them the flashcards you’ve prepared.
-
Practice counting using fingers:
- Ask students to practice counting again, this time using their fingers, and the numbers on the flashcards for reference.
- Encourage them to count out loud as they point to each finger or each number.
-
Introduce picture cards:
- Display the picture cards to the students. Point out the number and ask them to name the object on each of the picture cards.
- Then ask for a volunteer to hold up a flashcard with the number, and then have the class match the number to the corresponding picture card.
-
Practice matching numbers:
- Once the students have had a chance to match the numbers and objects, have them try it on their own.
- Give each student a picture card and a corresponding flashcard and ask them to match their number with the object on the card they were given.
-
Closing:
- To wrap up the lesson, ask the students to count from 1 to 5 one more time using their fingers. Congratulate them on their hard work, and remind them that practicing counting and matching numbers will help them to become better at recognizing numbers.
