Creative Lesson Introduction: Exploring RACE in Reading

Objective

Engage students in understanding the RACE (Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain) strategy for answering reading comprehension questions.

Introduction: The RACE to Read!

Attention, 4th Graders!

Imagine you are a detective on a thrilling quest to solve a mystery! In this lesson, we're not just any detectives; we are reading detectives who will unravel the hidden clues in stories through our reading skills. Today, you will learn a special formula called RACE that will help us find answers to questions about the texts we read!

Activity: Mystery Envelope

  1. Materials Needed:

    • An envelope labeled "MYSTERY" containing a short text excerpt (1-2 paragraphs) about a character in a story.
    • A large question written on a piece of paper inside the envelope, such as "What motivated the character to make their choice?"
  2. Procedure:

    • Begin the lesson by gathering the students in a circle. Present the "MYSTERY" envelope and explain that inside is a short text that holds a secret about a character's motivation.
    • Give students time to read the excerpt individually or in pairs and share their thoughts about what they think the answer to the question is.
    • Invite volunteers to share their hypotheses about the character’s motivation. Encourage them to think critically about their answers.

If the question is, "What motivated the character to make their choice?" a student might respond:

Wrap-Up

End the introduction by highlighting how the RACE strategy will serve as our secret weapon in the quest for understanding the stories we read. Once we master RACE, we will be able to answer any reading question thrown our way—just like true reading detectives!

Transition to Lesson Activities

Now that we've set the stage, let’s dive into our reading detective work! We will practice using RACE with different texts throughout the lesson. Get ready to uncover the mysteries hidden within the pages!
