Math Adventure: Counting Critters

Objective

Today, we will embark on a fun-filled Math Adventure exploring the magical world of counting! By the end of this lesson, you will be able to count up to 10 and recognize different numbers.

Introduction

Welcome to the Forest of Numbers!

Gather the children in a circle on the carpet. Soft, cheerful music plays in the background.

“Good morning, little adventurers! Today, we are going to explore the Forest of Numbers! In this magical forest, we will meet special critters who love to play games with us. Each critter has a number that tells us how many of them there are!”

The Magic Box

Show a colorful box decorated with images of animals. The box should be sealed with a ribbon.

“Look at this magic box! Inside, we have our critters. But before we open it, can anyone guess how many critters are inside? Let’s make our guesses!”

Encourage children to shout out their guesses. Acknowledge each response.

Opening the Box

Count and Discover!

Slowly open the box and pull out large, plush animal toys (e.g., bunnies, frogs, and birds) one by one.

“Let’s see what critters we have in the box! Each time I pull one out, we will count together!”

  1. Pull out the first critter (e.g., a plush bunny) and hold it up.

    • “Look! We have one bunny! Let’s say ‘one’ together!”
  2. Continue pulling out additional critters, counting together as you go:

    • 2nd: Bunny (Again) - “Two bunnies!”
    • 3rd: Frog - “One frog! Let’s count all the critters together!”

Counting Together

“Let’s put all our critters in a circle and count them from one to ten! Can everyone see? Count with me!”

As you count, use your fingers to point at each critter.

Conclusion

Adventure Recap

“Wow! What a great adventure we had in the Forest of Numbers! We met our critters and learned how to count to 10. Remember, counting is a fun way to see how many friends we have in our world! Now, let’s draw our favorite critter and write the number of them we saw!”

Activity

Hand out paper and crayons for the drawing activity. Assist children as needed and encourage them to share their drawings with the class!

Remember:

Mathematics can be ever so fun, especially when exploring with friends. Keep counting wherever you go!
