Welcome, Year 8 students! As you stand on the verge of moving into high school, it's essential to think about the challenges and opportunities that await you. High school is a time of growth, exploration, and discovery, but it can also feel overwhelming. Today, we're going to kick off our lesson with a thought-provoking activity that will help you identify the various types of support you might need as you embark on this exciting new chapter.
Let's begin with a creative exercise called the Support Triangle. Grab a piece of paper and draw a large triangle. Each point of the triangle will represent a different category of support during your high school journey. Label them as follows:
Academic Support: In this corner, think about the subjects you'll study and any specific areas where you might need help—be it maths, science, or even revising for exams. Jot down your thoughts on what support would help you excel.
Emotional Support: Transitioning to high school can be emotionally challenging. Reflect on the feelings you might experience—stress, excitement, uncertainty. Write down ways you could seek emotional support, whether from friends, family, or teachers.
Social Support: Making new friends and finding your place in a new environment can be daunting. Think about how you might need support in social situations—advice on making friends, joining clubs, or navigating peer pressure.
Once you’ve filled your triangle, we’ll gather as a class to share our insights. Each of you will have the opportunity to contribute, and together, we’ll compile a comprehensive list of the support you might need as you move through high school. This will not only prepare you for your journey but also help foster a supportive classroom environment where everyone feels ready to thrive.
By recognising and articulating the support you'll need, you're taking the first step towards a successful high school experience. Remember, you're not alone in this journey—your teachers, friends, and family are here to support you every step of the way. Let’s get started!
