Begin the lesson by dimming the lights and playing some suspenseful background music. Gather the students in a semi-circle, facing you.
Introduce the concept of "Math Mystery Boxes" with the following script:
"Good morning, mathematicians! Today we are diving into a world of mystery and math. Imagine you are detectives on a mission! Each of you will receive a special 'Math Mystery Box' that contains clues to solve a math problem hidden inside.
Each box has different items that you will use to unlock the secret codes of math. Some might contain numbers, others might have shapes, and a few might surprise you with equations! Your challenge is to work together, figure out what each item represents, and piece together the clues to solve the mystery of your box.
As I hand out these boxes, form small groups of 3-4 students. Once you open your box, remember to look closely at each item and think about how it relates to the mathematical concepts we've been learning.
Are you ready to crack the case? Let's go!"
