Daily Objective
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to analyze the main idea and supporting details of a chosen text, demonstrating comprehension through discussion and written responses. (DOK Level 3)
Lesson Duration
50 minutes
Day 1: Introduction to Main Ideas and Supporting Details
Warm-Up Activity (10 minutes)
- Start with a brief discussion on what students believe are the key components of a text.
- Ask: "What do you think a main idea is? Can you give an example?"
Direct Instruction (15 minutes)
Guided Practice (10 minutes)
- Distribute the text excerpt and have students work in pairs to identify the main idea and three supporting details.
The text excerpt is about the water cycle.
Closing (5 minutes)
- Review the main idea and supporting details with the class.
- Ask each pair to share one supporting detail they found.
Day 2: Identifying Main Ideas in Different Texts
Warm-Up Activity (5 minutes)
- Have students write down a short summary of what they did the day before regarding main ideas.
Reading Activity (20 minutes)
- Provide students with different texts (fiction and nonfiction).
- Fiction Example: A short story about a character's adventure.
- Nonfiction Example: An article on animal habitats.
Independent Practice (15 minutes)
- Have students read their assigned texts independently and write down the main idea and supporting details for each.
Closing (5 minutes)
- Pair up students to discuss their findings.
Day 3: Analyzing Text Structure

- Quick discussion: "How do authors structure their texts?"
Direct Instruction (15 minutes)
- Explain various text structures (e.g., cause and effect, problem and solution, chronological).
- Model how the structure affects the understanding of the main idea.
Group Activity (20 minutes)
- Divide students into groups to analyze the text structures of their assigned readings. Guide them on how to map out the main idea and supporting details based on the structure.
Closing (5 minutes)
- Groups share their findings with the class.
Day 4: Synthesis and Application
Warm-Up Activity (10 minutes)
- Conduct a quick review game on main ideas and supporting details using a quiz-style format.
Writing Activity (25 minutes)
- Students will choose one of the texts they read this week and write a short paragraph summarizing the main idea and supporting details.
Sharing and Reflection (10 minutes)
- Invite students to share their paragraphs in small groups or with the whole class.
Homework (5 minutes)
- For homework, students will find an article online or in a book, read it, and then write a brief summary that includes:
