Meeting Agenda
Introduction (10 minutes)
- Begin with a welcome and a short overview of the day's agenda.
- Pose the question: "What do you know about rainforests?" to gauge prior knowledge.
- Introduce the day's theme and key focus areas.
Session 1: Exploring Rainforest Ecosystems (30 minutes)
- Discussion:
- Discuss the layers of the rainforest (emergent, canopy, understorey, forest floor) and their significance.
- Activity:
- Split students into groups and assign each group a layer of the rainforest.
- Provide art supplies for students to create a visual representation of their assigned layer, including plants and animals that inhabit it.
Session 2: Biodiversity Spotlight (20 minutes)
- Presentation:
- Show a short video highlighting various rainforest species and their roles in the ecosystem.
- Group Sharing:
- Each group presents their rainforest layer and the species they discovered.
- Discuss how these species are interconnected and what would happen if one were removed.
Break (15 minutes)
Session 3: The Threats to Rainforests (30 minutes)
- Lecture & Discussion:
- Highlight the causes and effects of deforestation and climate change on rainforests.
- Present statistics on rainforest loss.
- Activity:
- In pairs, students will research one threat to rainforests and create a brief report outlining its impact and solutions.
Session 4: Conservation Efforts (30 minutes)
- Discussion:
- Discuss why conservation of rainforests is crucial for global health.
- Review current conservation efforts (e.g., reforestation, sustainable practices).
- Creative Activity:
- Students develop a conservation campaign poster that promotes awareness and solutions for rainforest protection.
Closing (15 minutes)
- Encourage students to share their posters.
- Summarise key takeaways from the meeting.
- Assign a reflective homework task: Write a paragraph on what they learned about the importance of rainforests and how they can help protect them.
Evaluation
- Monitor participation during discussions and activities.
