To foster a sense of community in the classroom while getting to know each other and practicing descriptive language.
Engaging Hook: Begin the lesson by dimming the lights and playing a soft instrumental background music. Project an image on the board that represents mystery—such as a shadowy figure or an intriguing landscape. Ask students to close their eyes and spend one minute thinking about a person they admire or a fictional character they relate to.
Prompt for Reflection: After the minute, ask them to consider what qualities or traits make that person resonate with them.
Instructions: Hand out an index card to each student and ask them to write down three descriptive adjectives that represent themselves—these can relate to their personality, interests, or values. Encourage them to be creative and thoughtful.
Card Collection and Grading: Once they’ve finished, have them fold their cards and place them in a small container or hat.
Guessing Game: Randomly draw a card from the container, read the descriptors aloud, and allow students to guess who the traits belong to. After a few guesses, reveal the person and have them share a little more about themselves.
As a follow-up, ask students to write a brief paragraph describing their favorite book or movie character, focusing on how that character’s traits reflect their own personality. They will share these in the next class.
“Getting to know one another is just the beginning of our journey together. Let’s make this year a memorable adventure filled with learning and growth!”
Consider creating a bulletin board titled "Class Traits" where you can post the adjectives chosen by students alongside their names, fostering a sense of belonging and recognition within the classroom.
