Welcome to the World of Fractions!

Lesson Starter: The Fraction Feast

Introduction: What is a Fraction?

Hello, Year 3! Today, we’re going to jump into the delicious world of fractions. But first, let’s use our imaginations and take a little trip to a magical place I like to call the Fraction Feast.

Visualisation:

Close your eyes for a moment and picture this scene:

Imagine you and your friends have been invited to a fantastic feast filled with all your favourite foods. There are pizzas, cakes, and even giant fruit platters—all beautifully arranged and ready to eat. But here’s the catch: the food needs to be shared, and that's where fractions come to the rescue!

Engaging Question:

Before we dive deeper, I want you to think about this question:

If we have one large pizza and we want to share it equally between 4 friends, how much pizza does each friend get?

Take a moment to discuss your thoughts with a partner.

Activity:

Now that you have some ideas, let’s explore this further. I’m going to hand out fraction cards with different food items written on them. Each card will have a fraction representing how much of that food we will share. For example, if you have the card "1/2 cake", that means we are sharing half of a delicious cake.

As you receive your cards, we will work together to figure out how to divide our delicious feast and ensure everyone gets an equal share—this is the heart of understanding fractions!

Conclusion:

Get ready to dig in! We’ll find out how we can divide our food, what those fractions mean, and how to make sure nobody goes hungry at our Fraction Feast! Let's learn by sharing and enjoying our math today! 🍕🍰🥗

Remember to keep your ideas about fractions ready. We’ll need them as we turn these tasty treats into numbers and lessons!
