Objective: Today, we are going to embark on an exciting journey to discover and understand the scientific method! By the end of this lesson, you will know the steps involved in conducting scientific investigations and how they help scientists answer important questions.
Present the Mystery Box: Place the closed mystery box in front of the class and intrigue your students by saying, "Inside this box is a mystery object that can help us learn about the scientific method!"
Prompt Questions: Ask the students, “What could be in the box?” and “How can we find out what it is?” Encourage them to share their guesses and ideas. This will get their minds thinking like scientists!
Record Hypotheses: As students share their ideas, write them down on the whiteboard. You can divide the guesses into categories (e.g., living things, tools, toys) to help them visualize the options.
Introduce the Scientific Method: Explain that the process they just went through is similar to the scientific method. We start with a question (What’s inside the box?), make a guess (hypothesis), and then we will test our ideas to find out the truth!
