Icebreaker Activity: "¿Quién Soy Yo?" (Who Am I?)

Objective

To help students get to know each other while practicing Spanish vocabulary and speaking skills in a fun and engaging way.

Materials Needed

Instructions

Step 1: Preparation

  1. Create Profile Cards: Before the class, prepare a set of sticky notes or index cards with brief descriptions of famous Spanish-speaking individuals. Each note should include three clues about the person but leave out their name. For example:
    • Clue 1: "Soy un famoso pintor español."
    • Clue 2: "Pinté la obra 'Guernica'."
    • Clue 3: "Nací en el año 1881."
    • (Answer: Pablo Picasso)

Step 2: Getting Started

  1. Introduction: Start the lesson by welcoming the students and explaining that each of them will become a "famous person" for this activity. Each student will receive a card that gives clues about someone they might not the face of but can guess.

  2. Distribute Cards: Hand out one sticky note or index card to each student but instruct them not to look at it yet.

Step 3: Icebreaker Activity

  1. Guessing Game: Ask students to read their clues aloud to the class one at a time without revealing who they are. The rest of the class will work together to guess the identity of the person.

  2. Encouragement of Language Use: Encourage students to ask questions in Spanish using phrases like:

    • "¿Es una persona famosa?"
    • "¿Vive en el presente?"
    • "¿Es un escritor o un artista?"
  3. Tally the Points: For each correct guess, give the team a point! This will promote teamwork and peer interaction.

Step 4: Reflection and Wrap-Up

  1. Discussion: After all cards have been guessed, have a brief discussion about the individuals featured. Ask questions like:

    • "¿Quién te sorprendió más?"
    • "¿Qué características o logros conoces de ellos?"
  2. Personal Connection: Finally, give students some time to think and write a short paragraph in Spanish about why they chose to connect with a specific person during this activity or who inspires them, in or out of the Spanish-speaking community.

Assessment

This activity not only warms up the class but also gets the students excited about learning Spanish while fostering a community atmosphere in the classroom.
