Objective:
To encourage students to mingle, learn about each other, and set a positive tone for the class.
Duration: 30-45 minutes
Materials Needed:
Preparation (Before Class):
Prepare a worksheet with a list of statements that could apply to students (e.g., "Find someone who has traveled to another country," "Find someone who plays a musical instrument," or "Find someone who has a pet"). Make sure to include a mix of fun and relatable statements.
Find Someone Who...
- Has traveled to another country ______________________
- Enjoys hiking in their free time ______________________
- Can speak two or more languages ______________________
- Has read a book this summer ______________________
- Plays a sport ______________________
- Has a unique hobby ______________________
Introduce the Activity (5 minutes):
Begin the class by welcoming everyone and emphasizing the importance of getting to know one another in a collaborative learning environment. Explain the rules of the activity: each student will need to go around the classroom and find classmates who match the statements on their worksheet. Once they find someone, they have to write that person's name next to the corresponding statement.
Conduct the Ice Breaker (20-30 minutes):
Allow students to walk around freely, encouraging them to ask questions and interact with as many classmates as possible. Remind them to mingle and not just stick to their friends.
Wrap-Up and Reflection (5-10 minutes):
Once the activity is complete, gather the students back into a circle. Ask a few volunteers to share interesting facts they learned about their classmates. Optionally, you can reward the student who completed their worksheet first or shared the most unique findings.
This ice breaker activity not only helps students learn names and interests but also fosters an inclusive classroom environment. By engaging with one another from the beginning, students will feel more comfortable participating in future class discussions and group work.
Tip: Tailor the statements to reflect your class demographic or interests to make it more relevant and engaging!
