Introduction

Welcome, Year 6! Today, we're diving into the wonderful world of Auslan, the sign language used by the Australian Deaf community. To get our brains warmed up and our fingers ready, we’ll start with an exciting Finger Spelling Challenge!

Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to finger spell the alphabet in Auslan and understand the importance of finger spelling in communication.

Warm-Up Activity: “Name That Sign!”

What You Need:

Instructions:

  1. Formation of Teams: Divide the class into small groups of 4-5 students.
  2. Flashcard Shuffle: Scatter the flashcards face down in the middle of the classroom.
  3. The Challenge:
    • One student from each team will race to flip a card over and quickly finger spell the corresponding letter to their team.
    • The team must correctly guess the letter that was finger spelled.
    • Once guessed, that team will then send the next student to the middle to pick a new card.
  4. Keep Score: Each correct guess earns a point for the team.

Time Limit:

Let’s set a timer for 10 minutes. The team with the most points at the end will be crowned the “Finger Spelling Champions of the Day!”
