Fun with Subjects and Predicates!

Objective: Understand the basics of subjects and predicates in sentences.

Introduction: The Sentence Adventure!

Start with a Story:

“Good morning, class! Today, we are going on a special adventure into the world of sentences! But first, we must meet two important characters who will help us navigate this journey: the Subject and the Predicate!

Meet the Characters!

Subject: The Star of the Sentence!

The subject is like the hero of our story. It tells us who or what the sentence is about. For example, in the sentence “The cat is sleeping,” the subject is “The cat.”

Predicate: The Action Star!

The predicate is the action that the subject is doing. It tells us what the subject is doing or what is happening. In our earlier example, “is sleeping” is the predicate because it describes what the cat is doing.

Activity: Sentence Detective!

Now it’s time to put on our detective hats!

  1. Prepare Sentence Cards: Write simple sentences on cards. For example:

    • “The dog barks.”
    • “Birds fly.”
    • “The sun is shining.”
  2. Detective Work: Divide the class into small groups and give each group a few sentence cards.

    • Task: Identify the subject and predicate of each sentence and underline them.
  3. Share and Discuss:

    • Each group will share their sentences with the class. As each group presents, encourage the students to cheer for the subjects and predicates they discover!

Conclusion: The Hero & The Action!

Wrap up the lesson by explaining that every sentence has a hero (subject) and an action (predicate) that makes it whole. Remind students that understanding subjects and predicates will help them become great sentence writers!

Let’s give a round of applause for our new friends, Subject and Predicate! 🎉
