7th Week Daily Lesson Plan for Reading
Overview
This lesson plan is designed for Grade 6 students, focusing on developing their reading comprehension skills according to the BIE (Buck Institute for Education) Arizona Standards. Over the course of five days, students will engage in activities that foster critical thinking and comprehension at DOK (Depth of Knowledge) Level 3.
Duration
Each lesson is designed to last 50 minutes.
Day 1: Introduction to Literary Elements
I Do (10 minutes)
- Objective: Introduce and explain the basic literary elements (plot, character, setting, theme) using a short story.
- Activity:
- Read a short story aloud to the class.
- Display a graphic organizer that highlights plot, characters, setting, and theme.
- Explain each element while engaging students through questioning.
We Do (20 minutes)
- Activity:
- In pairs, students will identify literary elements from another short story provided.
- Use a graphic organizer to record their findings.
- Groups will share their discoveries with the class, discussing how each element contributes to the story.
You Do (20 minutes)
- Activity:
- Students will read a new short story independently.
- Using their graphic organizer, they will identify the literary elements in their story.
- Submit their graphic organizers for assessment.
Day 2: Analyzing Characters
I Do (10 minutes)
- Objective: Understand how to analyze character traits and motivations.
- Activity:
- Discuss various character traits and motivations.
- Show a character analysis example from a familiar book or story.
We Do (20 minutes)
- Activity:
- In small groups, analyze a character from a provided text.
- Complete a character trait chart that includes direct and indirect characterization.
- Groups will present their character analysis to the class.
You Do (20 minutes)
- Activity:
- Students choose a character from the independent reading material.
- Write a short paragraph analyzing the character’s traits and motivations using evidence from the text.
Day 3: Understanding Theme
I Do (10 minutes)
- Objective: Define and identify theme in literature.
- Activity:
- Explain the difference between the main idea and theme using examples from known stories.
We Do (20 minutes)
- Activity:
- Read a poem or a fable as a class.
- Discuss the theme and record student contributions on the board.
You Do (20 minutes)
- Activity:
- Students will independently choose a story from their reading list.
- Write a reflective piece that identifies the theme and supports it with evidence from the text.
Day 4: Making Inferences
I Do (10 minutes)
- Objective: Learn how to make inferences based on textual evidence.
- Activity:
- Provide an example of making inferences using a short excerpt.
- Model how to ask questions about what is not explicitly stated in the text.
We Do (20 minutes)
- Activity:
- As a group, read a passage and discuss potential inferences.
- Record their inferences on chart paper.
You Do (20 minutes)
- Activity:
- Students will read a new passage independently.
- Write down three inferences they can make and the evidence they found in the text to support each inference.
Day 5: Synthesis and Reflection

- Objective: Integrate literary elements, character analysis, theme, and inferences.
- Activity:
- Summarize the key concepts learned throughout the week.
- Provide an example of combining elements from different texts.
We Do (20 minutes)
- Activity:
- In pairs, students will select two texts read during the week and compare and contrast the themes, characters, or elements.
- Create a Venn diagram outlining their findings.
You Do (20 minutes)
- Activity:
- Write a reflective essay synthesizing what they have learned about literary elements, including examples from their readings.
- Submit the essay for evaluation.
