Exploring Our Solar System: A Stellar Start to Science!

Introduction: Blast Off into Space!

Welcome, young astronomers! 🌌 Today, we’re going to embark on an exciting journey through space. Are you ready to explore the planets that orbit our sun? Let’s get our rocket engines ready and prepare for liftoff!

Hook Activity: Imagine You’re an Astronaut!

  1. Gather ‘Round: Have the students sit in a circle to create a cozy space.
  2. Spark Their Imagination: Ask each child to close their eyes and imagine they are astronauts preparing for a big mission.
  3. Space Questions: Pose the following questions to ignite their curiosity:
    • What would you see in space?
    • What colors do you think the planets are?
    • What kind of weird and wonderful things might you find on a faraway planet?
  4. Share Their Thoughts: After a minute of imagining, invite the students to share their ideas. Write down their answers on a whiteboard or chart paper to highlight their creativity.

Transition: Time to Explore!

Astronauts, when we think of space, we think of our Solar System! There are eight different planets orbiting around our sun, and each one is special in its own way! Today, we are going to learn all about these amazing planets and what makes them unique.

Fun Fact to Keep Them Engaged:

Did you know that the largest planet, Jupiter, is so big that more than 1,300 Earths could fit inside it? That’s HUGE!

Ready for Launch?

Let’s make our way to the Planetary Playground where we will learn all about each of our solar neighbors! Buckle up, astronauts—adventure awaits! 🚀✨

This lesson starter captures the imagination of first graders and prepares them for an engaging exploration of the planets in our solar system!
