Lesson Outline

• Introduce the three hands: hour hand (short), minute hand (long), and second hand (even longer) and their purposes.

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

• Point to each hand on the clock:

  • Hour Hand: The shortest hand that tells us what hour it is.
    Example: When the hour hand points to 3, it is 3 o'clock.
  • Minute Hand: The longer hand that shows how many minutes past the hour it is.
    Example: If the minute hand points to 12 and the hour hand points to 1, it is 1 o'clock.
  • Second Hand: The longest hand that shows the seconds counting.
    Example: The second hand keeps moving to help us measure time more precisely.

• Discuss the difference between the three hands. Encourage students to ask questions.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

• Hand out paper clocks to each student.
• Instruct students to draw the hands for various times called out, such as 1:00, 2:30, and 3:15.
• Walk around to assist and verify each student's understanding.

Closure (5 minutes)

• Recap the lesson by inviting a few students to share what they learned about the hands on a clock.
