Introduction to the Futur Simple: Journey into the Future

Objective

Today, we will embark on a journey to explore the futur simple in French. By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to express future actions and events with confidence.

Hook: The Time Capsule Activity

Setup

To kick-off our lesson, let’s imagine we have just uncovered a mysterious time capsule that was buried by students of Grade 11 from 30 years ago. This capsule contains letters they wrote to their future selves. Your task is to read these letters and guess what future events or dreams they wrote about.

Instructions

  1. Divide the Class: Form small groups of 3-4 students.
  2. Pass Out Letters: Distribute copies of fictional letters written in the first person. Each letter should express aspirations or events that they anticipated would occur in the future (e.g., "Je vais devenir médecin," "Nous allons voyager en France," etc.).
  3. Discussion: Give groups 10 minutes to discuss the letters. Their goal is to identify the verbs related to future events and to make predictions about what happened in the lives of these students.
  4. Share Insights: Each group will share one memorable aspiration from their letter and discuss how the writer might express that in the future tense.

Transition to the Lesson

After the activity, we will connect these future aspirations to the futur simple tense in the French language. We will discuss how to form the futur simple, practice conjugating regular and irregular verbs, and finally create our own letters to our future selves, similar to those we "discovered."

Why It Matters

Understanding how to use the futur simple will empower you to articulate your own dreams and plans in French. Whether you’re discussing your career ambitions, travel plans, or personal goals, mastering this tense will enhance your ability to communicate effectively in the language.
