By the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand the concept of "voice" in writing, identify their unique writing voice, and practice expressing themselves through personal writing.
Personal Reflection: Write a diary entry that reflects on a time when you felt a strong emotion (happiness, sadness, or excitement). Use your unique voice to describe your feelings and thoughts.
Guidelines:
Voice Exploration: Choose a favorite book or author. Find and write down one quotation that you feel showcases their unique voice. Briefly explain why you believe this is an example of their voice.
Diary Entry: (Sample response) My best friend moved away last summer, and I felt like my heart was ripped out. I remember vividly how I sat on the swings all alone, staring at the empty playground. I missed our laughter, the silly games we used to play under the sun. Each day felt a little duller without her here.
Voice Exploration: (Sample response) "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye." – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Evaluate student understanding based on their participation in class discussions, their writing samples during the in-class activity, and the quality of their homework assignments.
This lesson plan adheres to U.S. educational standards to engage sixth-grade students in exploring and expressing their unique writing voice.
