• Markers in different colors
• A variety of word cards (some with prefixes/suffixes and some without)

Activity Setup

Begin the lesson by creating an exciting atmosphere in the classroom. As students enter, have a bright, colorful poster displayed that reads:

"Unlock the Hidden Meanings!"

This will pique their curiosity right from the start.

Warm-Up Activity

1. Introduction (2 minutes)
   Greet the students and tell them that today they are going to embark on a word adventure! Explain that words can be transformed and made more powerful by adding "friends" at the beginning or the end.

2. Mini-Challenge (5 minutes)
   Tell the class they are going to engage in a quick challenge. Divide them into small groups of 3-4 students. Give each group a mix of word cards, some featuring prefixes (like "un-", "re-", "dis-") and some featuring suffixes (like "-ing", "-ly", "-ful"). Make sure some cards have no prefixes or suffixes at all.

3. Instructions
   Challenge the groups to create as many new words as possible in 3 minutes by adding a prefix or suffix to the base words on their cards. Encourage them to get creative and even think of definitions for made-up words!

4. Time's Up! (1 minute)
   After the timer goes off, ask each group to call out their favorite new word and a possible definition. Write down a few of these words on the whiteboard to refer back to later in the lesson.

Now that students are warmed up and excited, segue into a brief explanation about prefixes and suffixes:
