Lesson Plan: Math Lesson 21 - Identifying and Ordering the Numbers 1-5
Subject: Mathematics
Grade Level: Reception / Kindergarten
Duration: 30 minutes
Topic: Identifying and Ordering the Numbers 1-5 & Identifying a Missing Number
Objective
Students will be able to:
- Identify numbers from 1 to 5.
- Order numbers from 1 to 5.
- Identify a missing number within a sequence of numbers from 1 to 5.
Materials Needed
- Counting blocks or small objects (5 per student)
- Number cards (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
- Whiteboard and markers
- Worksheets for identifying and ordering numbers
- A large number line displayed in the classroom
Lesson Procedure
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin the lesson with a brief review of numbers 1 to 5. Use counting blocks to visually reinforce each number.
- Ask students to share how many fingers they have and count them aloud together.
2. Identifying Numbers (10 minutes)
- Display number cards (1-5) on the board.
- Point to each card and ask the students to read the number aloud.
- Create a game where students can match counting blocks to the correct number card displayed on the board.
- Example: Hold up the number 3 and ask, “How many blocks match this number?”
3. Ordering Numbers (5 minutes)
- Show the numbers in random order and ask students to place them in the correct order from 1 to 5.
- Use a number line to demonstrate how the numbers are arranged.
- Encourage students to say the numbers aloud as they order them.
4. Identifying a Missing Number (7 minutes)
- Explain that sometimes we can see a sequence of numbers with one number missing.
- Write a sequence on the whiteboard with one number absent, e.g., 1, __, 3, 4, 5.
- Have the students guess the missing number together.
- Provide a few more examples and encourage participation.
5. Review and Closing (3 minutes)
- Recap the lesson by asking students to identify what they learned today about numbers 1 to 5.
- Reinforce by having each student state their favorite number from 1 to 5.
- Distribute worksheets for additional practice at home or as homework.
Assessment
- Observe student participation during the identification and ordering activities.
- Collect completed worksheets to assess understanding of identifying numbers and recognizing missing numbers.
Extensions
- For students who grasp the material quickly, challenge them by introducing numbers 6-10 or creating simple addition problems involving numbers 1-5.
- Provide extra practice using online math games focused on numbers 1-5.
This lesson plan aims to engage students in learning through interactive activities while ensuring they recognize and understand basic number concepts.
