Lesson Plan: Superkids Golly Unit 3 Lesson 1 - Phonemic Awareness and Phonics
Grade Level
Reception / Kindergarten
Duration
30 minutes
Objectives
- Students will develop phonemic awareness by identifying and manipulating sounds in spoken words.
- Students will recognize and produce the phonetic sound for the letter 'G'.
- Students will be able to say words that begin with 'G' and identify them in spoken language.
Materials Needed
- Superkids Golly storybook (Unit 3)
- Sandpaper letters or letter cards (G)
- Rhyme cards featuring words that begin with 'G' (e.g., goat, game, garage)
- Phonics worksheet with pictures starting with the 'G' sound
- Whiteboard and markers
- Small prizes (stickers) for participation
Lesson Structure
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin the lesson by gathering students in a circle.
- Ask students if they can think of any words that start with the letter 'G'.
- Write a few examples on the whiteboard as the students share their ideas.
- Explain that today they will learn more about the letter 'G' and practice some fun phonemic activities.
2. Phonemic Awareness Activity (10 minutes)
- Introduce the concept of phonemic awareness. Explain what it means and why it's important for reading.
- Use the sandpaper letter or letter cards for 'G'. Show students how to trace the letter while saying the sound /g/.
- Conduct a sound-discriminating game where you say a word, and the students give a thumbs up if it starts with a /g/ sound (e.g., girl) and a thumbs down for words that do not (e.g., cat).
- Encourage students to repeat the /g/ sound together.
3. Phonics Practice (10 minutes)
- Read aloud a selection from the Superkids Golly storybook, focusing on the parts that emphasize words beginning with 'G'.
- After a few pages, pause and ask the students to identify any 'G' words.
- Distribute rhyme cards that feature words beginning with 'G'. Have students repeat them aloud after you.
- In pairs, have students practice saying their rhyme cards to each other.
4. Guided and Independent Practice (5 minutes)
- Hand out the phonics worksheet that features images of objects starting with 'G' and other letters.
- Explain how to complete the worksheet by circling the images that start with the /g/ sound.
- Allow students to work on their sheets independently while you circulate to provide support and encouragement.
5. Closing (5 minutes)
- Gather students back in the circle and discuss what they learned about the letter 'G'.
- Invite volunteers to share one 'G' word they learned today.
- Wrap up the lesson by handing out small prizes (stickers) to all students for their participation.
Assessment
- Observe students during the activities to assess their understanding of the phonemic sounds.
- Review completed phonics worksheets to evaluate students' ability to recognize the /g/ sound in words.
Adjustments and Accommodations
- Provide additional support for students struggling with phonemic sounds by pairing them with peers for extra practice.
- Use visuals and gestures to reinforce learning for English language learners or students with special needs.
Notes
- Ensure a positive and encouraging environment.
- Incorporate movements, such as clapping or jumping, to engage kinesthetic learners.
This lesson plan follows U.S. standards for early childhood education by focusing on phonemic awareness and phonics, which are fundamental skills for early reading development.
