Introduction: The Pizza Problem 🍕

Imagine it's your birthday, and your friends are coming over for a pizza party! You order a large pizza that is cut into 8 equal slices. As your friends arrive, you're excited to share but realize you need to figure out how many slices you can give each friend.

  1. If there are 4 friends at your party, how many slices can each friend have?
  2. If one friend is really hungry and wants 3 slices, how many slices will you have left?

Think-Pair-Share Activity

Step 1: Think

Take a moment to think about how you would solve these problems. Jot down any ideas you have about fractions. Remember, a fraction represents a part of a whole!

Step 2: Pair

Turn to a partner and discuss your thoughts. How did you approach the problem? What fraction would you use to represent the slices each friend gets?

Step 3: Share

After discussing with your partner, we’ll come back together as a class. I want to hear your thoughts on how to divide the pizza and what fractions you used.

Transition to Learning

Today, we’ll dive deeper into fractions! We will learn how to add, subtract, and compare fractions—all while keeping our imaginary pizza party in mind. By the end of this lesson, you'll be a fraction expert, ready to tackle any pizza sharing scenario that comes your way!
