Objective: Introduce Grade 1 students to the concept of subtraction through an engaging story.
Gather your students around and set the mood. You can even bring in a few props if you have them, like a cookie jar or pretend cookies to make it more interactive!
Teacher: "Today, we are going on a magical journey to the land of Sweetopia, where delicious cookies grow on trees! 🌳🍪 But, oh no! There’s a problem! The Cookie Monster has visited and started munching on the cookies!"
Teacher: "Can you help me figure out how many cookies are left after the Cookie Monster takes some? Let’s start our adventure!"
Teacher: "Once upon a time, in Sweetopia, there were 10 cookies hanging on the cookie trees! 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪"
Display a drawing or picture showing 10 cookies if possible.
Teacher: "But then, the Cookie Monster came along and gobbled up 3 cookies! Oh no! 😲"
Count down with the students as you pretend to eat the cookies, making munching sounds!
Teacher: "How many cookies are left on the trees for us to enjoy? Can anyone help me with this? Let’s use our fingers to count!"
Allow students to use their fingers for counting.
Teacher: "To find out how many cookies are left, we need to do some subtraction! We subtract the cookies the Cookie Monster ate from the cookies we started with."
Write on the board:
10 cookies - 3 cookies = ? cookies
Teacher: "Let’s count together! If we start with 10 cookies and we take away 3, how many do we have? Count backwards with me!"
You can count down from 10: 10, 9, 8, 7… until the students reach the answer together.
Teacher: "That’s right! We have 7 cookies left! 🎉 Now, Sweetopia is safe again, and we can enjoy the cookies the Cookie Monster left behind! Every time we take away, we are doing subtraction just like we did today!"
Transition into an activity where students can practice subtraction with drawings or counting manipulatives (like counters or small blocks) to reinforce what they learned.
Teacher: "So remember, whenever we want to find out how many are left after taking some away, we’re using subtraction! Thank you for being such great helpers in our cookie adventure today!"
This engaging and interactive start to the lesson not only introduces the concept of subtraction but also captivates the students’ imagination, making learning fun!
