By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Begin the lesson by engaging students in a brief discussion about sentences. Ask the following questions:
Write down their responses on the whiteboard. Summarise by explaining that a sentence tells us something and usually has a subject (who or what) and a verb (what they do). Example: "The cat runs."
Identify Sentence Parts:
Use a couple of examples from the whiteboard to highlight the subject and verb in sentences. For instance, “The dog barks.” Identify "The dog" as the subject and "barks" as the verb.
Discuss Capitalisation and Punctuation:
Explain the importance of starting sentences with a capital letter and ending with a full stop. Write an incorrect sentence on the board (e.g., "the bird flies") and transform it together into a correct sentence ("The bird flies.").
Sentence Building Activity:
Distribute sentence strips to small groups. Each strip contains either a subject or a verb. Ask the groups to mix and match their strips to create sentences.
Sharing with the Class:
Invite each group to share one of their sentences with the class. As they present, encourage the class to identify the subject and verb.
Correcting Together:
As a group, discuss if they have used a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end.
Distribute the sentence writing worksheet. Students will:
Wrap up the lesson by highlighting what they learned:
Encourage students to share their sentences with a partner, reinforcing peer feedback and encouragement.
Students’ understanding will be assessed through their participation during group activities and the sentences they write in the worksheet. Monitor their ability to structure sentences correctly and use appropriate punctuation.
