Connecting with Our Reading Journey: Lesson Introduction

Objective

Today, we will explore the fascinating world of connections we can make while reading! We'll discover how to connect stories to our lives, to other texts, and to the world around us.

Hook: A Magical Reading Adventure

Setting the Stage

Imagine you’re a brave explorer setting off on a magical adventure. You leave your classroom and enter a world where dragons roar, pirates sail, and superheroes save the day! But wait! Before we jump into this adventure, I’ve got a special challenge for you.

The Connection Challenge

In front of you, I have three colorful envelopes—Your Life, Other Stories, and The World Around Us. Each envelope contains a clue related to the connections we can make while we read. Your mission is to work with a partner to open each envelope and find out how we can connect what we read to our own experiences, to other stories, and to the world we see every day!

Group Activity: Opening the Envelopes

  1. Your Life: In this envelope, you’ll find a picture or a word that relates to our own experiences. When you see it, think of a time in your life that connects to this picture or word.

  2. Other Stories: This envelope contains a famous book cover. Think about another story you know. Does it remind you of this book? How is it similar or different?

  3. The World Around Us: Inside this envelope, you’ll find a current event or a fun fact about our world. How does this connect to what we read in our favorite books?

Discussion

After your group discusses the clues, we’ll share our connections together as a class. By connecting our own lives, other stories, and real-world events to our reading, we’ll see how stories can come alive in many wonderful ways!

Transition

Now that we’re all warmed up with our connections, let’s dive into our first story for today. I can’t wait to see how we connect the story to our adventures!

Remember: Every time we read, we don’t just learn about the characters or the plot; we also learn about ourselves and the world. Let’s embark on this reading adventure together!
