Welcome, Year 8 mathematicians! Today, we are going to embark on an exciting journey into the world of place value. But first, let’s set the stage with a captivating scenario.
Imagine you are explorers in a vast kingdom governed by the Numbers—a realm where each digit has a unique power based on its position within a number. Your mission is to uncover the hidden treasures that lie within these numbers, but there’s a catch: the kingdom is protected by a mysterious wizard known as The Place Value Phantom!
As you approach the phantom’s lair, he presents you with a riddle:
"I am a digit, but my value can change,
Depending on where I am, I can rearrange.
In the ones, I’m just one, in the tens, I’m ten,
But in the hundreds, I grow, making new friends.
What am I?"
After the discussions, we’ll participate in a Place Value Relay. Each group will be given a number on a card, and you’ll need to run to the whiteboard and correctly label the place value of each digit within a set time.
By the end of our lesson, not only will you have solved the riddle of the Place Value Phantom, but you’ll also be well on your way to mastering the concept of place value—your first step towards conquering the kingdom of Numbers!
Grab your pens and paper, and let’s unlock the mystery together!
