Lesson Introduction for Grade 5 Reading Intervention: "Reading Detective Agency"
Objective:
To spark students' interest in reading while providing targeted interventions for those on the MTSS list through interactive and engaging activities.
Introduction Activity: Become a Reading Detective!
Setting the Scene
Imagine you are a detective in a world full of mysteries waiting to be uncovered! Today, we will transform our classroom into the “Reading Detective Agency,” where our mission is to solve the case of the missing plot details, character traits, and themes in the books we read.
Warm-Up: The Case File
-
Gather Materials:
- Each student will receive a "Case File" (a simple folder).
- Decorate the cover of their Case File with detective symbols (magnifying glasses, footprints, etc.) to create a sense of excitement.
-
Assign Detective Roles:
- Students will be assigned a detective role based on their reading level:
- Plot Detectives (focusing on the storyline)
- Character Detectives (analyzing characters' actions and motivations)
- Theme Detectives (noticing the underlying messages in the story)
Introduction to the Case
- Present the Mystery:
- Show the class a short video clip or read a dramatic excerpt from a popular mystery book (such as "The Westing Game" by Ellen Raskin).
- Ask students guiding questions:
- What do you think will happen next?
- What key details did you notice?
Group Investigation
- Break Into Detective Teams:
- Divide students into small teams based on their assigned reading detective roles.
- Provide each team with a “Reading Mystery” book (available at their reading level) to investigate over the next few weeks.
Clue Collection
- Clue Tracking:
- Students will record important "clues" (key details, character notes, and themes) in their Case Files as they read.
- The more clues they gather, the closer they get to solving their reading mystery!
Incentives & Motivation
- Detective Awards:
- Offer fun awards such as "Best Clue Collector" or "Sharpest Detective" as students complete their reading mysteries.
- Celebrate their findings in a “Reading Detective Showcase” at the end of the unit.
Conclusion
By the end of this lesson, students will not only have fun as they immerse themselves into the world of reading but will also improve their comprehension skills in an engaging and interactive way. Get ready to unleash your inner detective and solve the mysteries hidden between the lines!
Note to Educators:
This activity aligns with MTSS standards by providing differentiated instruction tailored to student needs and encouraging teamwork and engagement in literacy learning. Adjust the texts and supports according to your students’ specific reading levels for maximum effectiveness.
