To engage Year 5 students in learning the names of the months in Spanish through a fun and interactive activity that sparks their creativity and encourages participation.
Set the Scene: Start by dimming the lights slightly and playing whimsical music to create an exciting atmosphere. Explain to the students that today they will meet a very special creature called the "Month Monster," who gets confused about the order of the months.
Introduce the Month Monster: Show the cut-out of the Month Monster. Describe how this creature loves to celebrate every month differently, but has trouble remembering the names!
"¡Hola, clase! Les presento a nuestro monstruo especial, ¡el Monstruo de los Meses! Este monstruo adora celebrar pero a veces se confunde y dice los nombres de los meses en el orden equivocado. ¡Ayúdame a recordarlos! ¿Quién puede ayudarme hoy?"
Call to Action: Tell the students that they will work together to teach the Month Monster the correct order of the months in Spanish. Each student will have a chance to pick a prop that represents a month and say the name of that month aloud.
Interactive Calendar: Use the projected calendar to point out each month as students share. Ask them to mimic the seasons or any related fun activity (like making snowflakes for January or pretending to smell flowers for May) when it's their turn.
Participation: Encourage all students to clap and cheer for each other after they share. This builds a team spirit and makes learning memorable!
Wrap up the activity by summarising the names of the months learned and asking the students which month is their favourite and why. Remind them that by helping the Month Monster, they’ve become experts in the months of the year in Spanish!
¡Bien hecho, Clase! Hoy hemos ayudado a nuestro Monstruo de los Meses a aprender los nombres de los meses en español. ¡Están un paso más cerca de ser hablantes de español increíbles!
