Welcome, Year 8 students! Today, we are diving into the exciting world of mathematics, specifically focusing on expanding brackets. But before we get started, let’s set the stage with a fun and engaging activity.

Activity: The Mystery Box Challenge

Objective

To create intrigue and engage your minds, we’re going to use a Mystery Box that represents an algebraic expression. Inside the box are various items that represent different terms in our expression.

What You’ll Need

  1. A box (it can be a shoebox or any small container)
  2. Small items (like toys, paper clips, or any classroom objects) representing variables and constants:
    • Variables: Use items like different coloured balls or blocks.
    • Constants: Use coins or other uniform items.

Setup

The Challenge

  1. Reveal the Box: At the start of the lesson, bring out the Mystery Box and introduce it as a collection of 'mystery items' that represent terms in an algebraic expression.

  2. Group Work: Divide the class into small groups. Each group will have 5 minutes to pull out items and create their own algebraic expression based on what they find. For example, if they pull out 2 balls (x) and 3 coins (3), they should express this as (2x + 3).

  3. Share & Discuss: After the time is up, each group will present their expressions to the class. This allows them to verbalise their thought processes and engage in discussion.

Transition into the Lesson

After sharing their expressions, explain that just like we have combined the items in the box to form an expression, in mathematics we often need to manipulate expressions by expanding brackets. This is the key to simplifying and solving algebraic equations.
