Begin by dimming the lights and placing some colorful Diwali decorations (like sparkling diyas and vibrant rangoli patterns) around the classroom. As you turn down the lights, invite the children to sit in a circle on the carpet.
Start off the lesson with a short, engaging story about Diwali. For example:
“Once upon a time, in a beautiful village, the people celebrated Diwali with bright lights, tasty sweets, and fireworks that filled the night sky with colourful patterns. Each home was decorated with tiny lamps called diyas, creating a magical light all around. Can you imagine counting all those sparkling diyas?”
Show the children a picture of a diya and ask them to help you count how many diyas are in the image. You can display a few pictures with different quantities of diyas (for example, 1, 2, 3, and so on). Engage them by asking:
Spread out some materials like glitter paper, scissors, and pre-cut shapes of diyas, stars, and fireworks. Ask the children to get creative by decorating their shapes with glitter and colours. Once they finish, help them count and sort their decorated shapes by size, colour, or type.
Wrap up the session by involving the children in making patterns. Use the decorated shapes they created to form sequences. Ask questions like:
