Good morning, preschoolers! Today, we’re going on a magical journey to discover the wonders of time! We’ll meet some friendly characters who will help us learn how to tell time. Put on your imaginary explorer hats and let’s dive in!
To begin our adventure, let’s gather around a large, colourful clock face that we’ve created in the middle of the room. It’s not just any clock; this is our Enchanted Clock!
Gathering Around: Invite the children to sit in a circle around the clock. Make sure each child can see the clock face clearly.
Story Time: Start with a short, engaging story about a magical land where the numbers come alive at different times of day. You can say:
“Once upon a time, in the land of Tick-Tock, every hour was filled with fun adventures! When the big hand points to the 12 and the little hand points to the 1, it’s time for all the friendly animals to wake up and play!”
Interactive Activity: Ask the children to help point to the numbers on the clock as you tell the story. Use a puppet or a soft toy to represent various animals that wake up at different times.
“Can you help me find where the big hand and little hand go when it’s 3 o’clock?” (Encourage participation.)
After engaging them with the clock and the story, transition to an activity in which children create their own clock with paper plates and markers.
Materials Needed: Paper plates, markers, and split pins for the clock hands.
Instructions:
Sharing Time: Once they’ve made their clocks, invite them to share one time from their clock, and create a short story about what happens at that time!
Wrap up the beginning of the lesson by reviewing some key points about time. Encourage the children to share their stories and celebrate their creativity! This magical introduction not only sets the stage for learning about time but also highlights the joy of storytelling and imagination in mathematics.
This creative approach captures attention, engages multiple senses, and encourages social interaction—all crucial in preschool learning!
Let’s embark on this time-telling adventure together! 🕒✨
