Creative Lesson Introduction: Part-Part-Whole Model

Objective

Today, we will explore the Part-Part-Whole Model in mathematics, which helps us understand how numbers can be broken down and combined!

Lesson Hook: The Magic Box

Setting the Scene

Imagine you have a magic box that can hold different objects. Let’s pretend we have 1 magic box in our classroom!

Activity

  1. Introduce the Magic Box:

    • Bring a small box (like a shoebox) to the front of the classroom. Decorate it with stars or stickers to make it look magical.
    • Explain to the students that this magic box can hold various items, and when we look inside, we’ll discover different treasures!
  2. Demonstrate Part-Part-Whole:

    • Select two different items to place inside the box (e.g., 2 toy cars and 3 toy animals).
    • As you place each item inside, say, “We have 2 toy cars (Part) and 3 toy animals (Part).”
  3. Reveal the Whole:

    • After placing the items in the box, close the lid and shake it gently.
    • Open the box and say, “Now, what do we have in total? Let’s count them together!”
    • Guide the students to count the items: “1, 2, 3, 4, 5. We have a total of 5 items (Whole)!”

Engage the Class

Conclusion

By using the magic box, we learned how parts can come together to make a whole! Today, we will create our own part-part-whole models using numbers. Get ready for some fun activities where you will be the mathematicians!

Important Reminder

Try to always refer to the parts and the whole during our activities today. Let’s see how many different combinations we can find!
