Lesson Introduction: All About Me

Objective:

Introduce Year 1 students to the concept of self-identity and personal descriptions by exploring the theme “All About Me.”

Lesson Hook: The "Magic Mirror" Activity

Materials Needed:

Begin the Lesson:

  1. Gather Everyone Together: Start the lesson by inviting all the students to sit in a circle on the carpet. This creates a comfortable environment for sharing.

  2. Introduce the Magic Mirror: Hold up the hand-held mirror and say, "Today, we're going to talk about ourselves! Can anyone guess what this is?"

    • Allow a few students to respond.
    • Once they identify the mirror, explain, "This is a magic mirror! It reflects not only how you look but also what makes you special!"
  3. Engage the Students: Encourage the students to take turns looking into the "magic mirror". As each child peers into it, ask them simple questions:

    • “What do you see?”
    • “What do you like about your hair?”
    • “What’s your favourite colour?”

Use these prompts to help them reflect on their personal traits and preferences.

  4. Create a Personal Profile: Next, provide each child with a piece of colourful paper and ask them to draw or write down:

    • Their name
    • Their favourite food
    • Their favourite animal
    • One thing they enjoy doing

Encourage creativity and remind them that there are no wrong answers—everyone is unique!

  5. Sharing Time: After they have completed their profiles, invite them to share with the class. Use sentences like, “My name is __. I like because .”

This promotes speaking and listening skills, reinforcing the vocabulary they’ll use throughout the lesson.

Transition to Lesson Development:

Conclude the introduction by saying, “Now that we know a little more about each other, let’s dive deeper into what makes YOU, YOU! We’ll learn new words to describe ourselves and our special things!”

This engaging and interactive start not only captures the children's attention but also lays the groundwork for understanding self-identity and personal expression in English.
