Creative Lesson Starter for Year 5 French

“Mystery Box” Activity

Objective:

To introduce French vocabulary related to everyday objects in a fun and engaging way.


Materials Needed:


Procedure:

  1. Preparation:

    • Before the lesson, place various everyday items into the mystery box.
    • Make sure that each item has a corresponding label in French, hidden inside the box.
  2. Introduction (5 minutes):

    • Start the lesson by showing the empty mystery box to the class. Explain that today they will be going on a "mystery adventure" to discover new French words!
    • Tell the students they will each have a chance to “dive into” the box to find an item and help learn its French name.
  3. Mystery Box Exploration (15 minutes):

    • Divide the class into small groups of 3-4 students.
    • Set a timer for 2 minutes for each group. One member from each group will take turns blindly picking an item from the box.
    • Once they pull out an item, they will look for the label in French and present the item to the class, saying the French name out loud. Encourage them to use phrases like, “C’est un/une…” (This is a...).
    • Allow the other group members to help if needed, promoting collaboration and discussion.
  4. Reflection and Sharing (10 minutes):

    • After each group has presented, gather the class together.
