Today, we’re going to explore a very special creature that helps farmers in their fields - the Scarecrow! But first, let’s have a little fun!
Activity: What’s Inside?
Let's dive into our Scarecrow Mystery Bag! I have a bag filled with different items that remind us of scarecrows. I’ll pull out one item at a time, and you can guess what it is!
Each item we find will give us clues about scarecrows and what they do. Are you ready? Let’s find out what's in the bag!
Item 1: (Pull out a straw)
“What do you think this is? Yes! This is straw, and at the top of scarecrows, they often have straw to look funny and keep them light!”
Item 2: (Pull out a hat)
“Look at this big hat! Scarecrows wear hats to keep the sun away, just like we do!”
Item 3: (Pull out a nice flannel cloth)
“Oh! Here’s a bright shirt! Scarecrows wear colorful clothes to look friendly and to scare away pesky birds.”
After revealing a few items, we can chatter about why farmers use scarecrows in their fields. They help to keep birds away from the seeds. Imagine if we were sitting in a big field, and we saw a funny-looking friend waving at us to say, "Shoo, shoo, leave those seeds alone!" Wouldn’t that make us giggle?
Now that we’ve learned about scarecrows, it’s time for a story! I have a wonderful book about a brave little scarecrow that goes on an adventure. As we read, listen for funny moments, and we’ll talk about how the scarecrow feels along the way!
After our story, we will create our own mini-scarecrows! We’ll use some of the materials we talked about to make our scarecrow friends.
Are you ready for a scare-tastic day? Let’s get started!
