Introduction to Film: An Engaging Lesson Start
Lesson Hook: The Film Time Capsule
Objective
To spark students' interest in film and set the stage for understanding its components and impact.
Activity Overview
Begin the lesson with a creative and interactive activity called the Film Time Capsule. This will not only engage students but also encourage them to think critically about film and its context.
Instructions
-
Materials Required:
- A clear, large container (plastic, glass, or an old film canister).
- Blank slips of paper or index cards.
- Pens or pencils.
- An assortment of iconic film stills or posters (printouts or digital projections).
- A timer.
-
Setup:
- Place the container prominently in the classroom.
- Display the film stills/posters around the room to create a visual ambience of the film world.
-
The Activity:
- Step 1: Introduce the Film Time Capsule by explaining that today, the class will be ‘preserving’ their thoughts and predictions about films and filmmaking.
- Step 2: Ask students to think back to a film that made a significant impact on them or that they believe represents a certain theme or idea.
- Step 3: Hand out the slips of paper and ask each student to write a short note that includes:
- The title of the film.
- A brief description (1-2 sentences) of what the film is about.
- Why this film is significant in their view (its themes, message, or personal significance).
- Step 4: Give students about 5-7 minutes to reflect and write their notes.
- Step 5: After writing, have each student fold their slip and place it in the container while briefly sharing their film title and a one-liner about why it matters to them.
-
Discussion:
- Once all slips are collected, lead a classroom discussion based on the films mentioned.
- Ask questions such as:
- "What themes are recurring in these films?"
- "How do films reflect societal values and issues?"
- "What makes a film memorable and impactful?"
Connection to Future Learning
Conclude by explaining that over the course of the lesson, students will explore various aspects of film, including narrative structure, character development, cinematography, and the socio-political context of films. Encourage them to keep their notes in mind as they develop a richer understanding of film as an art form.
This initial activity not only serves to break the ice but also encourages students to connect personally with the topic, making the study of film more relevant and engaging.
