Lesson Starter: Exploring Shapes

Introduction to Shapes

Welcome, amazing first graders! Today, we are going to embark on an exciting adventure into the world of shapes! But before we dive in, let’s start our lesson with a fun activity that will get our brains buzzing and our creativity flowing!

Shape Hunt Adventure

What You’ll Need:

Activity Steps:

  1. Shape Scavenger Hunt:

    • I want you all to look around our classroom and find items that are shaped like circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles.
    • Take your clipboard and make a list of the shapes you see. For example, can you find something that is round like a circle? Or flat like a square?
  2. Draw Your Findings:

    • Once you’ve found at least three different shapes, use your crayons or colored pencils to draw them on your paper!
    • Make sure to label each shape with its name!

Share Your Discoveries:

After the scavenger hunt, we will gather in a circle and share what we found! Each of you will have a chance to show us one of your shapes and tell us where you found it.

Why Shapes Matter:

Shapes are all around us, and they help us understand the world better! By learning about shapes today, we’ll discover how they make up the things we see every day—like our toys, buildings, and even our favorite snacks!
