The Magic Number Potion

Imagine you are a wizard or a witch in our very own Math Magic Academy. Your mission today is to mix together different magical ingredients (which are just numbers!) to create the Powerful Potion of Addition. By the end of the lesson, you will have the skills to combine numbers and make new ones!

Activity: Potion Ingredients

1. Gather Your Ingredients:

   • Each of you will receive a different number of colourful beads. Some might have 3 red beads, and others might have 4 blue beads.
   • The goal is to see how many beads you have when you combine them!

2. Mixing Your Potion:

   • Pair up with a friend. Share your beads and count how many you both have together. If you have 3 beads and your friend has 4 beads, how many do you have when you add them?
   • Use your fingers or draw it out if you need!

3. Create Your Own Magical Addition:

   • Now, find ways to combine different numbers of beads with others around you. Remember, each time you add, it’s like casting a spell to reveal a new total!

Reflection

Once we’ve mixed our potions, we will sit in a circle and share what we discovered. What happens when we add 5 beads and 2 beads together? What about if we add 10 and 3?
