Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Define the concept of the main idea.
- Identify the main idea in a text.
- Distinguish between main ideas and supporting details.
Materials Needed
- Whiteboard and markers
- Projector (if available)
- Printed excerpts from a variety of texts (short stories, articles, etc.)
- Graphic organizers (Main Idea and Details chart)
- Sticky notes
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Engagement Question: Start with the question, "What do you think is the most important part of a story?" Allow a few students to share their thoughts.
- Introduction to Main Idea: Explain that today, they will learn about the main idea, which is the most important point or message that an author wants to share with the reader.
Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

Define Main Idea:
- Write the definition of the main idea on the whiteboard: “The main idea is the central point or message in a text.”
- Explain that the main idea is often found in the first sentence of a paragraph or is summarized at the end.

Supporting Details:
- Define supporting details: “Details that explain, illustrate, or provide evidence for the main idea.”
- Give examples of supporting details: facts, descriptions, and anecdotes that help explain the main idea.

Identifying Main Idea:
- Share a brief paragraph, and model how to identify the main idea by asking guiding questions:
- "What is this paragraph mostly about?"
- "What is the author trying to tell me?"
Guided Practice (10 minutes)

Reading Excerpt Together:
- Distribute a short text to each student. Read the text aloud as a class.
- Discuss the text as a group. Ask students to highlight or underline what they think is the main idea.

Graphic Organizer Activity:
- Distribute the Main Idea and Details chart.
- Instruct students to write down the main idea at the top and list three supporting details below.

Share Results:
- Have students share their identified main ideas and supporting details with a partner.
Independent Practice (5 minutes)

Individual Text Analysis:
- Hand out a new short text for students to read independently.
- Instruct students to identify the main idea and write it down on a sticky note.
- Ask them to find two supporting details in the text and write them on the back of the sticky note.
