Objective: Today, we are going to explore what makes each of us unique and special. By the end of this lesson, we will learn about our unique traits and celebrate the differences that make us who we are!
Gather the students in a circle. Hold up a reflective object, like a small hand mirror or a shiny ball.
Say: "Hello, everyone! Today, we’re going to look at what makes YOU special! But first, let’s use this magic mirror! Can anyone tell me what they see when they look into a mirror?"
Encourage responses such as "I see my face!" or "I see my smile!"
Say: "Yes! You see you! Just like the mirror shows us our face, we are going to uncover what inside makes each of us unique and special!"
Select a read-aloud book that highlights diversity, individuality, or characteristics. A great example is “All Are Welcome” by Alexandra Penfold or “The Family Book” by Todd Parr.
As you read, pause to ask questions that encourage students to think about their own traits and experiences.
Example Questions:
After the story, provide each child with a simple craft project — a “What Makes Me Special” poster.
Materials Needed:
Say: "Now it’s your turn to tell us what makes YOU special! Draw a picture or write a word on your poster that shows one thing about you."
Once the posters are complete, invite each student to share their poster with the class.
Say: "Let’s all gather back together. Who wants to go first and share what makes them special?"
Conclude the lesson by emphasizing that everyone is unique in their own way, comparing classroom diversity to a colorful garden where every flower is different yet beautiful.
Reflect: Ask the children how it feels to share what makes them special and why it's important to celebrate each other's differences.
End with: "Remember, just like our magic mirror showed us, you are all amazing just the way you are!"
This lesson kickoff not only sparks interest and curiosity but also sets a warm and inclusive tone for a day dedicated to celebrating individuality!
