Lesson Plan: Past Continuous

Objective
Students will learn and understand the structure and use of the past continuous tense in English. By the end of the lesson, they will be able to form sentences in the past continuous and understand its context in storytelling and conversation.

Lesson Outline
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Greet the class and introduce the topic of the day: Past Continuous.
- Ask students if they know what the past continuous is and where it is used.
- Briefly explain that the past continuous tense describes actions that were ongoing in the past.
2. Explanation of Past Continuous (10 minutes)
- Forming Past Continuous:
Explain the structure:
- Subject + was/were + verb+ing
- Example: "I was playing", "They were studying".
- Usage:
- To describe events happening at a specific moment in the past:
- Example: "At 3 PM yesterday, I was doing my homework."
- To show that a longer action was interrupted by a shorter action:
- Example: "I was watching TV when the phone rang."
3. Guided Practice (5 minutes)
- Write several sentences on the board in the simple past and ask students to convert them to the past continuous.
- Example: "I played soccer." → "I was playing soccer."
- Request volunteers to share their answers and correct them as necessary.
4. Group Activity (5 minutes)
- Divide the class into small groups.
- Give each group a set of example sentences on cards that are either in past continuous or simple past.
- Ask them to identify which sentences are past continuous and to explain why.
5. Review and Recap (3 minutes)
- Quickly review the key points of the lesson.
- Reinforce the correct structure and use of the past continuous tense.
6. Homework Assignment (2 minutes)
- Assign students to write a short paragraph (5-7 sentences) about what they were doing yesterday at a specific time. They should use the past continuous tense as much as possible.
Homework Instructions
- Write a paragraph using the past continuous tense.
- Include at least three sentences in the past continuous.
- Example structure:
- "Yesterday at 4 PM, I was . At the same time, my brother was ."
- Be prepared to share your paragraph with a partner in the next class.
